About the event
This field trip is dependent on weather.
Photographing the Milky Way isn't as tough as it seems. It just requires the right equipment and patience. Foto Dono will be hosting a field trip to North Jetty Beach in Nokomis to photograph the Milky Way. Trying to photograph at that location does have its challenges, mainly because of light pollution. However most of the shooting will be at the beach.
The main goal for the field trip is to provide an experience in creating a single shot exposure or multiple exposures for stacking of the night sky. These images will then need to be rendered in post with Lightroom, Photoshop or other editing software.
We will meet in the parking lot at the end of the Jetty. The address is 1000 S Casey Key Rd, Nokomis, FL 34275.
Driving Directions - From I-75 Take exit 200 (HWY 681). HWY 681 ends going South on US 41. Take US 41 South to Albee Rd and turn right. Albee Rd ends at Casey Key Rd. Turn Left until you get the end of the road. You'll see the sign for North Jetty Fish Camp. I'll be at the far end of the parking lot.
You should arrive around 3:30 AM
Weather - This event is dependent on the weather. Clouds and rain make very poor visibility of the night sky. I’ll make a final decision to shoot or not shoot about 24 hours before I head out.
Timeline for Saturday Morning:
- 11:32 PM Galactic Center visibility starts
- 3:30 AM Arrive
- 5:24 AM Galactic Center visibility ends
- 6:45 AM Sunrise
Dono should be there by 3:00 AM.
Equipment - D-SLR camera or Mirrorless System. Bring your widest angle lens with a 2.8 f/stop or faster. You'll need a very sturdy tripod and a remote switch for your camera. Keep in mind this is depending on weather. So come prepared; bring a flashlight and bug spray!
Fee: $49 - Refunds - If the event is cancelled then a refund will be issued. However, there are no refunds if the Milky Way isn't visible due to cloud cover. This is a low light field trip with an opportunity to photograph the Milky Way.
