STORY: I was planning to head out with about 10 to 12 Milky Way Chasers to the Big Cypress Swamp in South Florida. It was the Labor Day weekend, and there was a New Moon on Friday. One of the few Dark Sky areas in the state and it seemed to be a perfect opportunity to chase the Milky Way.
Then Hurricane Dorian started to crawl out from the Atlantic and into the Caribbean. We waited and watched, but by Wednesday we pulled the plug. The Storm was threatening to barrel into South Florida. We canceled our reservations. It was going to be a monster, and it wasn't worth the risk.
Then Friday came, and it began to pull away from Florida. By Saturday it moved even further away, and the forecast called for mostly clear skies at Big Cypress; however, with a lot of moisture. By then our group was whittled down to 4 due to hurricane preparations. So we booked our rooms again and ventured into the dark on a Saturday.
Thunderstorms rolled in over throughout the day as we traveled South. Still, we believed in the forecast. We checked, waited, and were not disappointed. Hurricanes are a fact of life for Florida. They remind us, like the Milky Way, how small and fragile our species are on this pale blue dot.
