Welcome to Dry Creek

Updated: Feb 16, 2022

What is Dry Creek? It is a"western town" film set in Les McDowell's backyard and popular with photo enthusiasts. An active film set used in several productions throughout the year. I first discovered Dry Creek when I became the educational coordinator for Johnson PhotoImaging back in 2014.

Les McDowell is the owner and creator of Dry Creek. He is an actor and producer known for Dry Creek: America's First Frontier (2011), Killer Miller, and Joel D. Wynkoop's the Craiglon Incident (2021). Also, he recently won for best actor in a supporting role for playing Sherrif Walt in Killer Miller at the Global Independent Film Awards. He's published a book of cowboy poetry in 2009, Tales from the Trail: The Cowboy Poetry of Les McDowell.

The set he built has so much to offer, with its rustic western look, backdrops, a full saloon, jail, general store, stables, and much, much more. Since 2014, I've been leading photo shootouts at Dry Creek as the educational coordinator for JPI. The experience at Dry Creek is a great way to stretch your skills as a photographer. The general focus is working with available lighting.

I've tried to mix it up over the years with different themes - a western wedding, a steampunk shootout, and my favorite a zombie western.

A big thank you to the fantastic photographers and models over the years for their time and patience—a big shout out to Les McDowell of Dry Creek for hosting us in his backyard.

Here are some of the photos I took during the last shootout recently in October 2021.

You can see additional past photos and other behind-the-scenes photos from Dry Creek in the JPI InFocus Facebook Page photo albums.
